Intellectual property rights (IPR) in India are governed by the following acts: 

  • Trade Marks Act, 1999
  • The Patents Act, 1970 (amended in 2005)
  • The Copyright Act, 1957
  • The Designs Act, 2000
  • The Geographical Indication of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999

IPR protects the rights of creators to their intellectual property and prevents others from using, selling, or reproducing their work without permission. IPR includes seven types of rights:

To enjoy most types of intellectual property (IP) rights in India, you should register them. Registration takes up to two years. A trade mark in India is valid for ten years and can be renewed thereafter indefinitely for further ten-year periods.
